Worship

Scottsville UMC offers a vibrant traditional worship service. Vibrant in that we offer a blend of traditional and contemporary pieces of worship. We want you to feel comfortable worshiping with us so do not feel the need to dress up. Our service is interactive with call and response liturgy and music that spans the whole spectrum of Christian music. We offer contemporary style music in our gathering songs and traditional hymns with organ are sprinkled throughout the service. We hope you will come check us out on any Sunday at 11 a.m.

If you cannot make it to our  11 a.m. service feel free to visit our sister congregation, Mount Zion United Methodist Church at 9am. Mount Zion is a country church nestled in the woods just outside of the town of Esmont. This is a small but welcoming congregation. We worship traditionally at Mount Zion. You will receive the same message at both Mount Zion and Scottsville.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer communion? Communion is offered on the first Sunday of every month at both locations. In addition, communion is celebrated on special Sundays and holidays throughout the year.

Can visitors receive communion? The table of Holy Communion is Christ’s table, not the table of The United Methodist Church or of our local congregation. The table is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ’s love and to lead a new life of peace and love.

Are children welcome in worship? Children of all ages are welcome in worship. We believe that even the littlest of children learn how to worship by watching their parents worship collectively as the Body of Christ. We offer a children’s message as part of our service. This is a message based on the sermon of the day and is geared directly towards the children. In addition we offer “wiggle” bags. These bags contain an activity sheet, coloring book and crayons and are available by asking one of our greeters. These are for the children to use during the worship service.

Do you offer a place for children during worship? We offer two areas for our children during worship. Following the Children’s Message, children are invited to head upstairs with our two trained and background checked volunteers to participate in Children’s Church. They will learn a bible lesson and participate in a variety of activities while they are in children’s church. We have a Kids Zone located at the base of our steps just outside the sanctuary (look for the green chair). This little area is designed for children to relax and spread out. Parents are asked to monitor their children while they are in this area. The location of Kids Zone is designed so that parents can still listen to the service while their children utilize the space.

What should I wear? We want you to come as comfortable as possible. If that means a suit and tie or dress then feel welcome to do that. If that means shorts and a t-shirt, you are welcome to come however you feel comfortable. Christ called people of varying walks of life to worship together as one body. Come dressed in whatever way feels comfortable for you.

How long are your services? Services last about one hour. Our pastor packs a powerful message each week into 12-15 minutes. The remainder of the service is filled with beautiful prayers, music and liturgy. Our hope is that you will be transformed in this one hour and called to live out God’s command on your life when you leave.

Will I be called out in service? Our pastor will welcome you to worship collectively, never individually. If he does not recognize you he will likely speak to you individually as you exit the sanctuary. Do stop and introduce yourself to him! At the beginning of the service he will invite you to complete a blue “Connect Card.” This card gives the church information to connect with you. At anytime you can remove yourself from church mailing lists. Our pastor tries to reach out to you, in written form, within a week. You are welcome to place your blue connect card in the offering plate as it comes to you or you can turn it in following the service to receive a free gift from the church.

Do I have to participate in the offering? The offering is for members and regular attenders. Any money put into the offering plate will go to fund our Missions and Ministry budget but do not feel obligated to participate in the offering on your first Sunday.

Who is your Pastor? Pastor Brian joined us at Scottsville UMC on July 1, 2018. Click here for more information on our Pastor.
